How to Recognize Prostate Cancer Symptoms
Prostate cancer is considered a silent killer because a person in its early stages will probably not experience any symptoms. If ever there are irregularities experienced, these could point to the presence of other diseases. Possible prostate cancer symptoms may include the following:
- Frequent urge to urinate - Difficulty in beginning or holding back urination - Weak or interrupted stream of urine - Pain or burning sensation during urination - Feeling like the bladder never empties - Pain during orgasm - Presence of blood in urine or semen
Discomfort in the lower back, hips, pelvis, upper thighs, and other areas of the bones may occur, but these spell gravity, being a complication of prostate cancer symptoms.
If you feel any of these prostate symptoms, go for testing to determine what the true cause of your discomfort is. Other diseases that may have similar prostate symptoms are prostatitis and benign prostatic hypertrophy. It might not necessarily be prostate cancer. However, if it is cancer and it starts to grow, it will cause the gland to press against the urethra, thus the prostate cancer symptoms mentioned above will become more evident. Among the elderly, other possible prostate cancer symptoms experienced are weight loss and difficulty in having an erection.
These prostate symptoms are caused by an enlargement of the gland. They could be prostate cancer symptoms or not, but this generally happens when men get older. Usually, it is a benign enlargement and can easily be corrected. Whatever the cause of the irregularities is, they still cause the same discomfort. It so happens that pain and bleeding are actually not so common prostate cancer symptoms. When pain occurs in prostate cancer, it usually indicates that the disease has progressed to the bones having developed into a condition called secondary prostate cancer.
If you manifest prostate cancer symptoms or any other prostate symptoms, it is best to consult a doctor. Doctors have been issued guidelines as to what to do when a patient seems to be showing signs of prostate cancer. You will probably be required to take a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) Test and a rectal examination. Should your PSA reading look suspicious, you will immediately be referred to a specialist.
Most prostate cancer cases are slow growing and if there are even prostate cancer symptoms experienced, they are hardly perceivable. However, there is also an aggressive version of the disease and growth of the cancer is rapid. Either way, it is best to deal with the disease at the early stages. Time is a factor that may mean a big difference, but the fact is that both kinds can kill.
